How to choose a bed: a complete guide for 2026

A bed is a piece of furniture you will use every day for at least 7–8 hours, so choosing one deserves just as much attention as choosing a mattress. In this guide, we have collected everything you need to know before buying a bed: from selecting the size to the type of construction and compatibility with the mattress.

How to choose the right bed size

The most popular bed sizes in Lithuania are:

  • 90x200 cm – single mattresses, suitable for a children's room or guest room.
  • 140x200 cm – compact double bed, fits well in smaller bedrooms.
  • 160x200 cm – medium-sized double bed, the most popular choice for a couple.
  • 180x200 cm – spacious double bed, recommended if you want more room.
  • 200x200 cm – square bed for larger bedrooms or taller people.

Tip: choose a bed that is at least 15–20 cm longer than the tallest person sleeping in it, and leave at least 60 cm of free space around the bed so that it is easy to move around the room.

Types of bed construction

Wooden bed

A classic, long-lasting choice. Sturdy, natural, suitable for various interior styles – from Scandinavian to classic. Good heat and moisture insulation, supports mattress ventilation.

Metal bed

Lighter, often cheaper, suitable for minimalist or loft-style interiors. Slightly less sound-dampening than a wooden construction.

Upholstered (fabric or faux leather) bed

The most popular choice in modern bedrooms. The soft headboard provides comfort when sitting in bed (e.g., while reading or watching movies), and the design often allows for easy coordination with other bedroom furniture.

Bed with or without a storage compartment

A bed with a lifting base (storage compartment) is a great solution for smaller homes, as it allows you to effectively use the space to store bedding, blankets, or seasonal clothing. When choosing such a bed, pay attention to:

  • The type of lifting mechanism (gas springs allow the base to be lifted without much effort).
  • The depth of the storage compartment – the deeper it is, the more items you can store.
  • The sturdiness of the base – an orthopedic slat base distributes weight better and extends the life of the mattress.

Bed frame height and stability

The height of the bed (without the mattress) usually ranges from 30 to 45 cm – this is a comfortable distance for sitting down and getting up. A sturdy, high-quality frame and a slat base (orthopedic grid base) are just as important as the mattress itself: a weak base can reduce the lifespan of the mattress and worsen sleep quality, even with the best mattress.

How to match a bed with a mattress

Before buying a bed, it is worth knowing what kind of mattress will be used in it:

  • Standard dimensions – check if the internal frame size of the bed exactly matches the mattress size (e.g., a 160x200 cm bed requires a 160x200 cm mattress, not a 150x200 cm one).
  • Slat density – the more slats in the bed base, the more evenly the weight is distributed and the longer the mattress lasts.
  • Orthopedic base – especially important if you are choosing a memory foam or latex mattress.

If you have not yet decided on a mattress, take a look at our guide on choosing mattress firmness – you will find tips on how to select a mattress based on your sleeping position and weight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What bed size is suitable for two adults? For a couple, it is recommended to choose a bed of at least 160x200 cm, and if you want more space – 180x200 cm.

Is a bed with a storage compartment suitable for daily use? Yes, the gas spring mechanism allows you to lift the base easily and effortlessly every day, so such a solution is suitable for constant use.

How long does a bed frame last? A high-quality wooden or metal bed frame can last 15–20 years or more if properly maintained.

Does the bed size have to exactly match the mattress size? Yes, it is recommended to choose a mattress whose dimensions exactly match the internal frame size of the bed so that the mattress fits properly and does not move.

Summary

When choosing a bed, the most important things to consider are the size of the bedroom, your height, desired functionality (e.g., storage compartment), and – most importantly – compatibility with the mattress. A high-quality bed, together with the right mattress, is the foundation for a good night's sleep for many years.
